Policy updates
California releases 2026 Extreme Heat Action Plan Governor Gavin Newsom's administration released the 2026 Extreme Heat Action Plan, outlining strategies to protect Californians from increasingly frequent and severe heat events while advancing long-term resilience. The plan:
Supports additional investment in TECH Clean California, the state’s heat pump incentive program, citing the program's previous $75 million allocation as part of the state's progress and identifying continued funding as a priority.
Highlights the 2025 Energy Code, which took effect January 1, 2026, and expands the use of heat pumps while strengthening electric-ready and ventilation requirements for new buildings.
Calls for expanded direct-install heat pump programs to help overcome upfront cost barriers for income qualified households.
Advocates for streamlined heat pump permitting, including grants to local governments and broader implementation of the TECH Clean California permitting pilot to reduce installation delays.
We especially love this because it aligns with Senator Scott Wiener’s SB 222 Heat Pump Access Act, which would simplify heat pump permitting statewide. The bill is making its way through the legislature, and we hope to share an update in the next newsletter.

Induction cooking has an option for every home. Here's how to find yours.
No matter what your kitchen looks like, there's an induction option built for you. Induction cooking has come a long way, with offerings for every budget, every home, and every kind of cook. Whether you own, rent, are in the middle of a renovation, or just want to upgrade one appliance, there's something for you.
“This is my ginormous heat pump that's cold climate heat pump rated. It's good down to -15 degrees. It works great, and as far as I know, my resistance heat has never come on.”
A new pilot program took an unexpected approach to improving children's asthma symptoms: replacing gas stoves with induction ranges. Researchers found that reducing indoor air pollution from cooking led to measurable health improvements for participating families, adding to growing evidence that the appliances in our homes can have a meaningful impact on the air we breathe. It's a compelling reminder that electrification isn't just about energy. It also supports healthier homes.
A new California initiative is tackling one of the biggest barriers to heat pump adoption, upfront costs, by organizing neighborhood group purchases. By aggregating demand, installers can work more efficiently and homeowners can save 15–30% on installation costs.
Buying a heat pump is only part of the cost. Installation, permitting, and electrical work often make up the biggest share of the bill. A new analysis from SPUR highlights three ways California can help bring costs down over time: training more qualified installers, reducing unnecessary electrical upgrades, and streamlining permitting. While these are behind-the-scenes changes, they could make heat pumps more affordable and easier for homeowners to install in the years ahead.
